Beaujolais? No Way! 11/19

Wine Lovers Unite!

Don’t get swept up in the ooh-la-la Beaujolais Nouveau frenzy that deludes thousands of unsuspecting wine-people in Tokyo every November.

Plus all guests have a chance to win a premium wine door prize AND we will send everyone home with a wine related goodie bag.

6,000 yen per person or 10,000 yen for two people.
Very limited seating- (we’re a cozy place) RSVP required.

Kimono Wine Bar Set to Be Open Next Week in Tokyo

Cupcakes by Day - Wine Bar by Night: Notting Hill Cakes and
The Kimono Wine Bar Launch a Delicious Destination

The challenging economy is leading to inspired – and unexpected – cooperative business projects around the world, and Tokyo is no exception.

In that spirit, the Kimono Wine Bar will debut on Tuesday, September 8. The Wine Bar will share a cozy, chic space with Notting Hill Cakes & Gifts, this upscale professional neighborhood’s purveyor of delicious cakes and treats.

Kimono Wine Bar producer Lauren Shannon tells the story: “
“Tokyo-ites really appreciate good food and good wine. We’ve been thinking of opening a place for wine lovers and wine learners alike. At the same time, my friend Mark Peterson wanted to do something creative with his space during down times. So, we decided to create a special space, inspired by Japan’s Art Deco period. We’ll offer a New World Wine menu, with some nice surprises. And, we’ll have the great foods that go well with wine cheese plates, savory dishes, small canapés and cured salami. We’ll also offer craft beers and a wide range of classic cocktails.”

With its elegantly funky balance of warm wood hues, lovely art and dynamic lighting, the space needs surprisingly little work to change from the bright, lovely café by day, to the sophisticated spot for excellent wines by night. With seating for up to 22, there’s space for intimate conversations as well as group get-togethers. It’s a match made in heaven (and Nishi-Azabu) for wine lovers.

Reserve a private table or join other patrons at the long open table - or reserve the open table for your group of 8-12 people, The Kimono Wine Bar will also be offering private party menus for your birthday or other special gatherings.

Hours:
Tues - Thurs 7:00-12:00am
Friday - Saturday 7:00pm – 1am
For reservations/press inquiries call 03-5464-3788 or email info@kimonowinebar.com

The Kimono Wine Bar is located at
4-18-20 Nishi Azabu

What’s the deal with wine points, anyway?

Wine spectator, various books, writers, and magazines all have developed scores, points or stars for wine. I have always been suspicious of these systems. Today I read an interesting bit on the BKWine Blog.

Wine points pointless?

the question certainly has a point. Yes, it can be interesting and “convenient with wine ratings sometimes. But in many ways it is unfair and unjust to reduce a wine to a simple score. Because you can’t really rate a wine with a number. Read for example in the WSJ article about the wine that once had a top score in the Wine Spectator and a bit later only had a very moderate score. The same wine. What had happened? Nothing really. And you should certainly not blame the WS and say that they are incompetent wine judges. It’s just that you simply can “rate (or taste) a wine differently at different occasions. On top of that, different persons have different tastes and appreciate different wines. Some like Burgundy and others like Amarone. Some like elegance others prefer structure. And Parker does not have the same taste as Jancis (Robinson) who does not have the same taste as (Hugh) Johnson who does not have the same taste as BKWine…

you can read the full piece here and more from the SFGate here. We would love to hear your opinion on giving wines a score.

First Wine School in Fujimamas Kona a Success!

We kicked off our Saturday school program in Kona for the first time today. It was a great success with 18 folks attending. We have been running these classes in our Tokyo location since last Novemeber, and we have been excited to try out the idea here in Hawaii. The Saturday Wine School is meant to be a fun, casual, affordable and unintimidating place to try and learn about wine and wine tasting. Rachel Dixon from Southern Wine and Spirits here in Hawaii was our instructor. We had 18 guests! and everyone seemed to have a great time.

In today’s class we tried 4 new world wines all with classic characteristics from each type. We had 2 whites (a sauvignon blanc and a chardonnay) and 2 reds (a pinot noir and a merlot). Rachel guided everyone through basic steps in tasting, smell, swirl, sip and summarize. And we discussed each type. We are hoping to have future event in Kona, including a Saturday School devoted to Japanese Rice Wine (sake). If you want to know about our events in either Tokyo or Hawaii make sure you sign up for our mailing list here.

Keep your eyes on the blog for listings of Kona (and Tokyo) events.

A while ago we found this great wine event site. It allows users to list up events that are wine related in their areas and users can also sign up to get “The Juice” which is an email listing of wine events nearby. We have been using the site to list up Fujimamas Tokyo Wine events with great success. I recommend that folks go check out the site, and sign up for their news releases. The juice includes good wine info, articles and product announcements as well as event updates.

they also list up, ranked in user voting order, a great list of wine blogs and resources. Check it out, and keep in touch to find out all the great wine events at Fujimamas.

We also welcome you to sign up for the Fujimamas newsletter listing all our food, wine, and community events!

as we head full into winter

I was reflecting on the lovely fall we have had. Starting with the wine dinner back in sept. and leading up to last week’s Thanksgiving dinners, it has been a good fall season at Fujimamas Tokyo! The photo- left were the appetizers we had at the beginning of the Sept. 6th wine dinner with Sokol Blosser winery. The chowder in the egg cup was my favorite. the breaded eggplant was nice as well. All in all, 2006 was a good year. We celebrated our 8th year and The opening of Omotesando Hills brought us new business and lots of new faces. We have built a very good team in the front and back of the house. We have had many wonderful events. And just this month, launched our new Now we are looking forward to the end-of-year party season. Or as we say here in Japan Bonnenkai Season, and our Christmas Dinner and Brunch! (gingerbread pancakes! Yum!) We will finish out the year with our first-ever- FUJIMAMAS DJ pre-party - 6 dj’s, asian tapas, and more (12/31- from 7pm-10:30- for a little fun before the main event parties througout the city). It has been a good year, and wonderful fall.
