First Wine School in Fujimamas Kona a Success!

We kicked off our Saturday school program in Kona for the first time today. It was a great success with 18 folks attending. We have been running these classes in our Tokyo location since last Novemeber, and we have been excited to try out the idea here in Hawaii. The Saturday Wine School is meant to be a fun, casual, affordable and unintimidating place to try and learn about wine and wine tasting. Rachel Dixon from Southern Wine and Spirits here in Hawaii was our instructor. We had 18 guests! and everyone seemed to have a great time.

In today’s class we tried 4 new world wines all with classic characteristics from each type. We had 2 whites (a sauvignon blanc and a chardonnay) and 2 reds (a pinot noir and a merlot). Rachel guided everyone through basic steps in tasting, smell, swirl, sip and summarize. And we discussed each type. We are hoping to have future event in Kona, including a Saturday School devoted to Japanese Rice Wine (sake). If you want to know about our events in either Tokyo or Hawaii make sure you sign up for our mailing list here.

Keep your eyes on the blog for listings of Kona (and Tokyo) events.

A Visit from Pink

Pink

We had a great VIP visitor last week. Music Star PINK came by Twice!!! She was a wonderful guest, friendly and warm. Santiago our door host that night got her autograph- and our thanks to the salad chef for the night KENJI- for making her a special salad even though we weren’t in dinner service yet.
That takes our total Foriegner- (non-Japanese) VIP count to 4 for the last 12 months.

1. The Harlem GlobeTrotters/ 2. Cold Play/ 3. Neil Gaiman and now 4. PINK

You can see/hear her new controversial song “Dear Mr. President” over on youtube.

We are hoping for a visit from POP diva Madonna some day as Santiago is a HUGE fan!

Washington Wine Month Recap- from guest blogger Jan N. from Orca International

Washington Wine Month has gotta be the next best thing to sliced bread.washington wine logo

Every March, winemakers from the hottest wine region in the world (that’s Washington, for those of you who want to be ‘in the know’) flock to Tokyo to take part in Japan’s nationwide ‘by the glass’ Washington wine promotion, hosting wine parties, elegant wine dinners and meeting as many wine lovers here as they can.

Washington Wine Month 2006 was spectacular! 155 restaurants across Japan poured hundreds of thousands of glasses of wine, hosted many events and spread the word that ‘Washington wine is here!’

The highlight of March was the Washington Wine Month Kick-off Party at Fujimamas on March 8th. Fujimamas hosted winemakers Charles Smith of K Vintners and Eric Dunham of Dunham Cellars, over 100 guests and great tunes from Samurai FM. Orca International staff poured over 50 Washington wines, Fujimamas chefs created a delicious dinner buffet and I didn’t see a grumpy face in the bunch!

Orca International and Fujimamas have been teaming up over the past few years not only to bring everyone fun events and delicious dinners, but also to share the most well known secret about Washington wine… it goes great with food! Not only that, but the wines are fabulous from year to year.

Bob (Parker) says of Washington State:
‘It has arrived.’
Robert Parker’s partner in crime, Pierre-Antoine Rovani, recently gave a speech after touring Washington. Here’s what he had to say:

‘So what are (Washington’s) best varietals? Well, Syrah for sure. But Cabernet is the way to go for you in Washington. You can produce better Cab than any place in the world. I really believe that. Merlot. You certainly beat the pants off California and it will continue.’

Next time you see a Washington wine, Washington Wine Month or not, give it a try and discover what Fujimamas has known all along…
